Why EFT?
One reason I decided to become a Licensed Professional Counselor was because of my interest in “new age” kinds of therapy techniques that could be used in addition to talk therapy. During my internship, I began experimenting with several alternative methods, each proving to be effective in some circumstances. A few years later, I discovered EFT and I knew that it was different. Since I began using EFT in 2003, I have seen it work over and over again, reducing or completely eliminating nearly every problem nearly every time. So how does it do it??? Let’s look at why EFT works.
Albert Einstein discovered long ago that everything is energy—appearing in different forms. This includes you and me. EFT is an energy technique. The effectiveness of EFT, therefore, is related to the idea that we are “energy beings”. We have channels of energy that flow throughout the body. When we feel good emotionally and physically, that energy is flowing smoothly.
However, when we experience something negative (a trauma, an abusive incident or any event that is perceived as negative), a disruption in the body’s energy occurs. It is this energy disruption that causes the emotional upset. Over time, the upset resolves, either permanently or temporarily. When the resolution is temporary, it exists in a state that can be re-triggered by other experiences. So, present-time occurrences that relate in some way to the original event can trigger a response similar to the original upset, causing emotional distress, and sometimes, physical reactions as well.
When we use EFT, we are actually engaging the energy system in a way that addresses the original upset. We focus attention on the problem, feeling, or memory and add tapping on the end points of the channels of energy. When you’re focused on the feeling or memory, the disruption in the energy is there. The tapping is sending pulses into the energy system and can clear the disruption.
So what about physical problems? There seems to be a connection between stress and physical response. When stress is ongoing or chronic, the body does what it can to handle this stress. Muscles tighten which can cause physical discomfort. Examples of this include tightness in neck and shoulders, back discomforts, headaches and so forth. So when physical symptoms exist, we might begin by tapping on the physical symptom itself. Sometimes this is enough to reduce the muscle tightness and therefore, the body discomfort. When clearing is slow or not happening at all, we start looking for emotional contributors. Addressing the emotional contributors will often reduce or eliminate the physical symptom. Sometimes the result is permanent. When it’s not, it doesn’t mean that EFT doesn’t work. It means there may be more aspects of the emotional contributors that need to be cleared. There’s more to do!
